Jose Mourinho was announced as the winner of the new FIFA World Coach of the Year award at exactly 19:23 this afternoon in Zurich. His incredible success in the 2009/10 campaign served him to win the accolade.
“I would like to congratulate two marvelous coaches: Vicente del Bosque and Pep Guardiola. I’ve worked very hard to reach this far, but I haven’t done it on my own. I want to thank my players, my colleagues and, especially, those who love me and who have supported me at all times to get to experience this very special moment.”
Mourinho’s best season so far was, without a doubt, the 2009/10 campaign, during which he won the Italian league, the Cup of Italy and the Champions League with Inter Milan. This historic treble with the Neroazzuri made everyone regard him as the best coach in the world.
National team coaches and captains, as well as journalists from all over the world, decided the Portuguese coach should be the recipient of the 2010 FIFA World Coach of the Year accolade by awarding him more points than fellow nominees Vicente del Bosque and Pep Guardiola.
Mourinho’s perfect run as coach in 2010 did not end with the titles he won with Inter Milan before the summer. He went on to sign for Real Madrid, with whom he has earned 23 victories, 3 draws and only 2 defeats in the 28 official games he’s coached.
Real Madrid Director General Jorge Valdano and Director of Institutional Relations Emilio ButragueƱo travelled to Zurich to support the coach, as well as players Casillas and Cristiano Ronaldo, during the gala.
